Psychoanalytic Counselling

How I work

I use a psychodynamic approach to counselling which means I believe that our negative feelings and behaviour patterns are often the result of experiences in our past. Working with you, I help you make links between your past and present so you start to recognize and understand your true feelings. Once you have this understanding you can begin to break away from the control your feelings have over you, and to make the changes you want to bring into your life.

The relationship between counsellor and client is key to bringing about these changes. Within this relationship, we work together to find the best way forward for you. At all times, you determine what you talk about and when it is talked about.  You talk in a place where there is space for you, and where there is an opportunity to reflect and make choices.  This is also a space where your trust and self-belief can grow — and a space where you know that you are not struggling alone.

I also recognize that everyone is individual and unique. At times I may use alternative therapeutic approaches that I believe will help you with your particular needs and to facilitate a successful outcome for you.  (For further information see BACP’s ‘seeking a therapist/what is therapy’ and MIND’s ‘talking treatments’.)

As a BACP Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist I adhere to an established code of ethics.  This ensures my work is confidential, ethical, competent and professional.  I do not judge, nor do I advise, but instead help you to explore, understand, and change.

Where I work

I work both in the voluntary sector and in private practice in the Witney and Oxford areas. I am also an affiliated member of Oxford Therapy and Self-Development and provide assessment services to Oxford Women’s Counselling Centre.

As an independent practitioner I receive regular clinical supervision with a professional supervisor, who also adheres to codes of ethics in relation to client confidentiality.  The supervision helps to support me in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and expertise in my work with you.
